Cairo is Egypt’s capital and the starting point for most visitors’ Egypt journey. It’s home to the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World — the Great Pyramid of Giza — plus the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), medieval Islamic Cairo, ancient Coptic Cairo, and the twin Old Kingdom capitals of Memphis and Sakkara. Marvel operates Egyptologist-led tours here, from half-day pyramid visits (from $70) to multi-day Egypt highlights packages that start with Cairo.
Cairo isn’t a city you check off in an afternoon. Even the Giza Pyramids alone — three monuments built by three successive 4th-Dynasty pharaohs — Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure — plus the Sphinx and the Solar Boat Museum — reward at least a full day. Add the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) with the complete Tutankhamun collection, and you’re looking at 2 days minimum just to see Cairo’s ancient side properly.
Beyond the ancient world, Cairo layers 2,000+ years of continuous urban history. Coptic Cairo (the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue) marks the birth of early Christianity in Egypt. Islamic Cairo — a UNESCO site — is a living medieval quarter with Al-Muizz Street, Al-Azhar mosque, Khan El-Khalili souks, and dozens of Mamluk-era mausoleums.
Every Marvel tour that starts in Cairo is led by a government-licensed Egyptologist — not a “step-on guide” or an unlicensed driver-guide. Our Giza tours cover both the classic pyramids and the newly opened GEM. Our Islamic and Coptic Cairo tours walk the pedestrian quarters with a historian. Our multi-day packages typically start with 2 days in Cairo before continuing to Luxor, Aswan, a Nile cruise, or the Red Sea.
October through April is ideal (mild days, cool evenings). May-September gets progressively hotter — July and August range 95-105°F (35-40°C). Marvel adjusts summer tours with early-morning starts and air-conditioned transport included on every tour.
Cairo is the starting point — most visitors combine it with Luxor, Aswan, and a Nile cruise. Our multi-day packages take care of the flights, hotels, and coordination between cities.
