Alexandria is Egypt’s second city and its Mediterranean face — founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE, capital of the Ptolemaic kingdom (Cleopatra’s Alexandria), and later a major Roman and Byzantine center. Today it’s home to the striking modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina (a 2002 revival of the ancient Library), the Roman Kom El Shoqafa catacombs, Qaitbay Citadel (built on the ruins of the Pharos lighthouse), and Pompey’s Pillar. Why Alexandria is worth the day trip

Alexandria is different from the rest of Egypt — the light is cooler, the buildings are European-scale (Ottoman, Italian, Greek), and the Nile isn’t nearby. What’s here isn’t pharaonic; it’s Ptolemaic, Roman, and Byzantine, plus the modern rebuilt Library.

Most travelers do Alexandria as a long day trip from Cairo (3 hours by road each way, or 2.5 hours by fast train). That’s enough for the Bibliotheca, Kom El Shoqafa catacombs, Qaitbay Citadel on the waterfront, Pompey’s Pillar, and lunch on the corniche. If seafood on the Mediterranean matters, an overnight in Alexandria is worth it — the fish restaurants are better than anywhere in Cairo.

The Kom El Shoqafa catacombs are the highlight for most travelers — a 2nd-century Roman-era hypogeum where you descend through spiral stairs into three levels of tombs that mix Egyptian, Greek, and Roman iconography. When to visit

Alexandria is comfortable year-round because of the Mediterranean influence — even summer days rarely exceed 90°F, and winter days sit in the 60s. May-October is peak beach season for Egyptians; November-April is quieter and cheaper. December and January can be windy and rainy — bring a light jacket.
