Hurghada is Egypt’s Red Sea coast base — a resort city that faces some of the healthiest coral reefs in the world (Giftun Island, Abu Nuhas, Small Giftun). It’s where Egyptian families come to swim, where European divers come for the reefs, and where many multi-day Egypt trips add 3-5 days of beach time after Cairo and Luxor. How to combine Red Sea with Egyptology

Most travelers spend 3-5 days in Hurghada as the “wind-down” after the heavy Cairo + Luxor + Aswan phase. That’s smart pacing: temples and tombs are demanding, and the Red Sea gives you a place to actually rest.

The two must-do water days from Hurghada are (1) Giftun Island snorkel (half-day boat with mask, fins, and lunch on board) and (2) a diving or advanced snorkel trip to Abu Nuhas wrecks or Small Giftun if you have PADI certification or want to try a discover-scuba dive. The reefs are exceptional — visibility 20-30 meters is normal.

The must-do land day is a Luxor day tour from Hurghada — 4 hours by road each way (or 45 min domestic flight if you upgrade), Karnak + Valley of the Kings in one long day. This is where the Egyptologist matters most: skipping Luxor from a Red Sea base is a mistake, and skipping it with a good guide is a bigger mistake.

Desert safaris (quad bikes, camels, Bedouin dinner) are optional — fun, not deep. If you have a spare afternoon and want something different, we set them up.

When to visit

The Red Sea has a longer season than the temples: March through November is generally warm enough to swim, and dive shops run year-round. December-February is cooler in the water (wetsuit territory for divers) but excellent for combining with Cairo/Luxor land time. Summer (June-August) is hot on land (95-100°F) but the sea and reefs are at their best.
