Why Aswan deserves a slower pace

Aswan is calmer than Cairo or Luxor — the temples come with fewer crowds, the Nile is at its widest and cleanest, and Nubian villages across the river reward a slow half-day. Two days is the practical minimum: one for Abu Simbel (whether you go by road at 4am or by flight), and one for the Philae + High Dam + Unfinished Obelisk loop plus felucca on the Nile.

Abu Simbel is unmissable and is best done as a day trip from Aswan — the two options are (1) a 3-hour drive each way with a convoy departure around 4am (harder but cheaper), or (2) a 45-minute domestic flight with hotel pickup (easier but pricier). We arrange either.

Philae Temple, dedicated to Isis, sits on an island in the Nile you reach by small boat — the temple itself was relocated stone-by-stone in the 1970s when Lake Nasser flooded its original island. Most travelers arrive by Nile cruise from Luxor (3 or 4 nights, with Edfu and Kom Ombo temple stops en route). Others fly direct from Cairo. Both are fine — we’ll suggest the one that fits your itinerary.

When to visit

October through March is the sweet spot — 70s-80s°F in the day, cool at night, and the Nile is at its most inviting. Summer (May-September) is brutally hot (110-115°F at Abu Simbel), so we shift all tours to very early morning and include AC transport plus rest stops. The February 22 and October 22 solar alignment at Abu Simbel is a special day — book well ahead.
