Things to Do in Cairo Besides the Pyramids
If you are looking up things to do in Cairo, separate the city from the pyramids before you build a day.
The Giza Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum are in Giza. Cairo is the city on the other side of that day: Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, the Nile, food, and the evening. Most first trips need both. They are not the same visit, and they do not fit comfortably into one rushed afternoon.
Give the plateau and the museum their own time. Use Cairo for the city. The Giza Pyramids tours page is the pyramid day. This page is everything around it.
What belongs on a Cairo day
A useful Cairo day is one neighborhood done properly, not a list of twenty doors.
These are the city experiences that have their own shape:
- Islamic Cairo, including Al-Muizz Street and Khan el-Khalili, especially when the day ends on the river.
- Coptic Cairo and the historic religious quarter, often paired with Islamic Cairo on one private day.
- The Citadel of Saladin, which on Marvel’s bookable day is paired with the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, not with a bazaar walk.
- The older Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, which is not the Grand Egyptian Museum.
- The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization at Fustat.
- A downtown street-food walk.
- A sunset felucca, a Nile dinner cruise, or the Tanoura show. Evenings are collected on Night Tours.
If the only question is where ordinary Cairo still feels local, read where to experience local culture in Cairo. This page is the wider map. That one answers the culture question.
Islamic Cairo, Al-Muizz Street, and Khan el-Khalili

Islamic Cairo is the medieval city, not a single mosque. Al-Muizz Street is the walk travelers remember: gates, mosque fronts, and workshops close enough that you are in the street, not looking at it from a coach window. Khan el-Khalili sits against that quarter. It is a working bazaar, not a museum of shopping. Go for the lanes, the tea, and a clear idea of what you actually want to buy. A guide who is already with you is there to keep the walk moving, not to add a showroom that was never on the day.
Marvel’s city version of this walk is the Al-Muizz Street and sunset felucca tour. It is a private day in Islamic Cairo that finishes on the water. It is not a night tour. If you only want the sail, book the felucca on its own. That choice is explained again under the Nile section below.
Monument doors inside the quarter have their own tickets and hours. Do not treat the street as free entry to every building on it. Check the day’s tickets before you promise yourself a specific mosque interior.
Coptic Cairo

Coptic Cairo is the older religious quarter in the south of the historic city: churches, the Coptic Museum area, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue among them. It is compact compared with Islamic Cairo, and it feels quieter. It still is not a twenty-minute photo stop if you want the quarter rather than a single doorway.
The bookable way to see it with Islamic Cairo is the Coptic and Islamic Cairo day. The live page describes historic churches, a synagogue, and great mosques, with an Egyptologist. Read that page for what the day includes. This guide does not restate the itinerary.
The Citadel, and the museum that shares its day

The Citadel of Saladin sits above the city and is one of the easiest places to understand how wide Cairo is. Marvel does not sell it as a standalone half-day on its own URL. The live day that includes it is the Citadel and Grand Egyptian Museum tour. That day also goes to the museum in Giza.
Book it when you want the Citadel and the museum. Do not book it expecting Khan el-Khalili and Coptic Cairo. Those belong to the other city days above.
Which museum you mean
Travelers mix up three museums. They are different buildings, in different places.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is in Giza, near the pyramids. It is the museum people now mean when they talk about the Tutankhamun collection and a major new building. Hours, timed entry, and prices change. Use how to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum for the practical visit, and Giza Pyramids tours for where it sits in the pyramid day. Do not copy ticket prices into this article.
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is the older museum in downtown Cairo. It is not a second entrance to the Grand Egyptian Museum. What each building currently shows has been shifting as objects move. Before you plan a day around one mask, one hall, or one name, check the museum that actually holds it. This draft does not assign individual objects to rooms.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization is in Fustat, in Cairo, not on the plateau. Marvel’s NMEC half-day is built around that museum, including the Royal Mummies Hall named on the tour. Confirm the hall is open on your ticket before you treat it as guaranteed.
A fourth historic area, not a museum, is the northern cemetery. Marvel runs it as the City of the Dead half-day. It is a quieter part of historic Cairo. It is not a substitute for Al-Muizz Street.
Food in Cairo

Eat where the food is the point of the hour, not a buffet attached to a shop you did not ask for.
The bookable tasting is the Cairo street-food walk. That page describes a private four-hour evening walk in Downtown or Islamic Cairo. It is a tasting, not a sit-down dinner. The dishes it names are koshari, ta’amiya, ful medames, fiteer, molokhia, hawawshi, and kunafa, with a stop for a local drink. It does not name restaurants. This guide does not add any. If the tour page changes the list, follow the tour page.
If you want dinner and a show, that is the cruise below, not this walk. Marvel’s rule on unrequested shops sits in Egypt tours without shopping stops. A bazaar that is already part of an Islamic Cairo day is not the same thing as a shop that was never on the plan.
A felucca or a dinner cruise

Both are Nile evenings. They are not interchangeable.
The sunset felucca is a private sail. The tour page describes it as about two hours around sunset. Use that page if the length or the meeting point changes. Choose it when you want the river without a show.
The Nile dinner cruise is later, with dinner and a performance on the boat. The tour page includes a Tanoura piece with the dinner and a belly-dance set. Choose it when the meal and the show are the evening.

The Tanoura show at Wekalet El Ghouri is the dance in a historic courtyard, not a segment on a boat. Book Ghouri when the dance is the reason you are going. Book the cruise when you want dinner on the water.
Night Tours is the page that holds those evenings together. This article should not become a second night guide.
Cairo after dark
For a city evening, start at Night Tours. That page is the felucca, the dinner cruise, Tanoura, and the food walk. A night at the pyramids is Giza, not this guide.
How to split one, two, or three days
You have one day in Cairo and you have not seen the pyramids. Do not spend it only in the city. Read can you do the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in one day and the Giza Pyramids tours page. The city can wait for the next morning.
The pyramids are already done, and you have one city day. Choose one: the Coptic and Islamic Cairo day, or Al-Muizz Street and a sunset felucca. Adding the Citadel day as well means adding the Giza museum again. That is a third museum block, not a lighter city walk.
You have two days. One day belongs to Giza. The other belongs to the city, unless you intentionally book the 2-day Cairo highlights package. Read that page before you assume the shape. Its published route is the Giza Plateau and the Sphinx area, Memphis, and Saqqara, then the Citadel, the Coptic Cairo churches, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Khan el-Khalili is an optional add-on on that page, not the base day. If you want Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo as the city piece, keep them as their own day and use Giza Pyramids tours for the plateau.
You have three days. The Discover Cairo in 3 days package is the bookable version that already names the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Saqqara, Memphis, Dahshur, and Islamic and Coptic Cairo. Use the package page for the order and the hotel. This guide does not rewrite it.
You are adding Alexandria, Luxor, or Aswan. Alexandria is a separate day from Cairo, on the Cairo and Alexandria package or the Alexandria day trip from Cairo. Luxor and Aswan come after, through Egypt tour packages. How long the whole country takes is in how many days you need in Egypt. That guide already says Cairo alone is usually two or three days before the Nile.
Season sits in the best time to visit Egypt. Families sit in Egypt tours for families. This page does not replace either one.
Getting around, without a fake timetable
Marvel’s Cairo days include hotel pickup in the zones named on each tour page. That is the simple version: you are not hailing a car outside the mosque.
Ride-hailing exists in Cairo. Apps, airport rules, and pickup points change. This draft does not tell you which app to trust. If you are on a private day, use the car that is already booked.
Traffic is real. A drive that looks short on a map can take much longer at the wrong hour. Do not plan a monument, a museum, and a flight around one unnamed number of minutes. If you are landing and hoping to see the pyramids the same day, use can you visit the pyramids after landing in Cairo. That article owns the airport question.
Cairo and Giza are not the same place
Cairo and Giza are separate governorates, side by side. Greater Cairo is the name travelers use for the capital area that covers both. It is not a third city, and it is not a reason to put the pyramids in downtown Cairo.
Search still files the pyramids under “Cairo” because that is how trips are planned: a hotel in one governorate, a monument in the other. On the ground, keep the names straight:
- Giza: the pyramids, the Sphinx, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the plateau around them.
- Cairo: Islamic Cairo, Coptic Cairo, Tahrir, Fustat, the Nile evenings, and the downtown food walk.
- Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur: south of the plateau. They are not a walk from Khan el-Khalili, and they are not inside the pyramid fence. They sit with the Giza Pyramids tours.
When you are ready to book the city days and the pyramid days from one list, start at Cairo and Giza tours. The cultural days also sit together on Cairo cultural experiences.
Questions travelers ask before they book
Are the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo?
They are in Giza. The drive starts from Cairo hotels on a normal pyramid day. The site itself is not in downtown Cairo, and it should not be booked as a quick add-on to Khan el-Khalili.
Is Khan el-Khalili worth visiting?
Yes, if you want the bazaar as part of the Islamic Cairo walk and you have time to browse. It is a weak use of the only morning you have before a flight. Pair it with Al-Muizz Street, not with the pyramids, on the same half-day.
What can you do in Cairo at night?
Use Night Tours: felucca, dinner cruise, Tanoura, or the food walk. A night at the pyramids is a different product and a different place.
How many days do you need in Cairo?
Two or three days is the usual city-and-pyramids start, and how many days you need in Egypt is the country answer. One day can cover the plateau and the museum only if you accept the limits in the one-day article. It does not also cover Islamic Cairo.
What are the free things to do in Cairo?
You can walk public streets without buying a tour: Al-Muizz Street in the open air, the lanes of Khan el-Khalili, and the Nile corniche. That is the free layer. Going inside a mosque, a church, a museum, or the plateau is a ticket, and those prices change, so this page does not call any monument free. On a Marvel day, the tickets named on that tour page are part of the booking. Wandering is not the same choice as a day with the doors included.
Is Cairo a good place to travel with children?
Yes, when the day has one main place and a real break. Heat, walking, and crowds are the limits. Egypt tours for families is the longer answer.
Is Cairo safe for travelers?
Read your own government’s current Egypt advice before you go, including the UK FCDO page and the US Egypt travel advisory if those are your governments. This article does not repeat an alert level. Optional extras at the pyramids are a Giza question: agree the price and what is included before you accept anything that is not already on your booking. That sits with the Giza Pyramids tours, not here.
When you want the day arranged
Choose the city day on its own page, or look across Cairo and Giza tours. If the mix is not on a single tour, ask Marvel to plan it. You should see the time and the price before you book.
The pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum stay on Giza Pyramids tours.
