Best Time to Visit Egypt: A Month-by-Month Guide

Best time to visit Egypt - Pyramids of Giza

Egypt is one of those rare destinations that can be visited year-round — but the experience varies dramatically depending on when you go. The difference between visiting in December and visiting in July is not just a matter of temperature; it shapes everything from where you can comfortably explore to how you experience the ancient sites and the Nile.

After guiding thousands of travelers through Egypt across every season, the team at Marvel Egypt Tours has put together this definitive month-by-month guide to help you choose the perfect time for your Egyptian adventure.

Quick Overview: Egypt’s Seasons

  • Peak Season (October to April): Cool, dry weather — ideal for sightseeing
  • Shoulder Season (September, May): Warm but manageable — fewer crowds, lower prices
  • Hot Season (June to August): Extreme heat in Upper Egypt — best for budget travelers
  • Nile Cruise Season: October through April offers the most pleasant conditions afloat

Month-by-Month Breakdown

October — The Sweet Spot

October is arguably the best month to visit Egypt. The brutal summer heat has broken, temperatures are warm but comfortable (25–30°C in Cairo, 30–35°C in Luxor), and the tourist season is just beginning to pick up. You get the best of all worlds: pleasant weather, manageable crowds, and prices that haven’t yet reached their December peak.

October is particularly magical in Upper Egypt. The light has a golden quality in the mornings and evenings that makes photographing the temples and monuments an absolute joy. If we had to pick one month, October would be it.

November to February — Peak Season

These months represent Egypt’s peak tourist season, and for good reason. Temperatures throughout the country are at their most comfortable, ranging from around 20°C in Cairo to 25–28°C in Luxor and Aswan. The Nile Valley in particular is glorious during these months, with clear blue skies and cool evenings perfect for exploring the ancient temples.

  • December: Christmas and New Year travelers — book 3–6 months ahead
  • January: Often the quietest month of peak season — excellent value
  • February: Perfect weather, Valentine’s Day packages available

March and April — Spring Magic

Spring in Egypt is beautiful but comes with one caveat: the Khamaseen. These seasonal sandstorms, which can blow in from the Sahara Desert between March and May, can occasionally disrupt sightseeing plans. When they don’t arrive, however, March and April offer some of the year’s most pleasant conditions.

May and September — Hidden Gems

These shoulder-season months are underrated gems for the experienced traveler. The crowds have thinned significantly, prices drop considerably from their peak-season highs, and the weather, while warm, remains manageable with appropriate planning.

In May and September, we recommend scheduling major sightseeing in the early morning (before 10:00 AM) and late afternoon (after 4:00 PM), retreating to your hotel for a leisurely lunch and rest during the midday hours.

June, July, and August — The Heat is Real

Summer in Egypt is intense. In Luxor and Aswan, temperatures regularly exceed 40°C and can reach 45°C or more during heat waves. That said, summer has its advantages: prices are at their absolute lowest, popular sites are significantly less crowded, and many travelers find the heat manageable with the right approach — early morning tours, afternoon rest, and evening exploration.

Special Events Worth Planning Around

  • Abu Simbel Sun Festival (February 22 and October 22): The sun aligns perfectly with the temple interior — a once-in-a-lifetime sight
  • Ramadan: A fascinating cultural experience but some restaurants close during daylight hours
  • Eid al-Fitr: Egypt is festive and lively, but domestic tourism peaks
  • Cairo International Film Festival (November–December): For culture lovers visiting the capital

Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors who want the most well-rounded Egyptian experience, we recommend October, November, or February. These months combine excellent weather, manageable crowds, and competitive prices to give you Egypt at its most accessible and enjoyable.

Whatever month you choose, Marvel Egypt Tours will design your itinerary to make the most of the conditions and season. We know Egypt in every weather, in every light, and in every crowd level — and we always find a way to show you its best side.
